Gonder- the graceful city of Gonder was founded by Emperor Fasilides around 1635, the city of Gonder serve as a 3rd permanent capital of Ethiopia from the rise of Fasilidas to the fall Tewodros famous for its many medieval castles and the design and the decoration of its churches. Flanked by twin mountains streams Gonder retains an atmosphere of antique charm mingled with an aura of mystery. The city was a vigorous and vital center of religious learning’s and art. For more than two hundred years skilled instruction in painting, music, dance, architecture, building technology, poetry and many other discipline flourished during those glorious era of Gonder time, Fasilidas and his successors saw their elegant capital as a phoenix and so patronized the arts.
Bahar Dar is marvelous town set on the south - eastern shore of Lake Tana, the two main attraction sites are 13th century ancient monasteries that have been built around Lake Tana and on the many Islands one can reach with an interesting boat trip on lake Tana 3rd biggest lake in Africa and the Blue Nile water fall creates “Smoking Water" an awe-inspiring sight as it plunges into the gorge below (the fall is full during the rainy season) Bahirdar is also famous for colorful local market at Bahir Dar is renowned for its weavers and wood workers. |
DAY 1- FLY ADDIS ABABA GONDER- FULL DAY EXPLORE CAMELOT OF AFRICA
Early in the morning around 5:45 AM transfer to the airport to fly to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Gonder known as the “Camelot” of Africa, nestled in the foothills of the breathtaking Semien Mountains National Park in the northwestern part of the country was the 17th and 18th century capital city of Ethiopia, which was founded by Emperors Fasiladas (1632 – 1667) and was home to a number of emperors & warlords, curtsies and kings who built several castles and palaces around the area. Visit the oldest and the most impressive Gonderian structure, the magnificent castle compound including the two storied palace of emperor Fasiladas, built of roughly hewn brown basalt stone held together with mortar, the fantastically decorated Debre Brehan Silassie Church (light of Trinity),the bath (now baptismal place during Ethiopian epiphany, January 19) of king Fasiladas, overnight hotel
DAY 2- DRIVE GONDER BAHIRDAR BOAT TRIP ON LAKE TANA VISIT MONASTERIES & EXCURSION TO BLUE NILE FALL- FLY BACK ADDIS ABABA
Early morning around 6:00 start drive to Bahirdar through the beautiful and fertile countryside on the Lake Tana side on new paved road, it takes 2:30-3:00 hours transfer to hotel after a short breakfast break take a boat trip on Lake Tana and visit two of the most accessible and representative of the monasteries with very beautiful well painting from the medieval time still serving their original function, Ura Kidane Mehret and Azwa Maryam after that Drive 32 KM to Blue Nile fall, as now is the rainy season the fall is worth to visit with a lot of water, drive back to Bahirdar and transfer to the airport to fly back to Addis Ababa, evening cultural dinner with traditional live music and dance performance from different tribes in one of the best Ethiopian traditional restaurant.
